Best Management Protocols (BMPs)
A major goal of our organization is to improve beach management in ecologically sensitive areas. To that end we have targeted the specific areas for development of essential protocols, or BMPs. This work is ongoing. All reviews are developed with shared information from people with experience in management and science and all are peer reviewed before acceptance. These are intended to be living documents subject to changes as our knowledge increases. Please check back for updates. If you are interested in development or review of protocols please contact us. Note: The following BMP's are advisory in nature and meant to be a starting point for developing protocols, not the final word. The general information has been reviewed by beach managers and scientists and is considered acceptable practice. Each organization must develop appropriate guidelines according to its own specific needs and conditions. Grunion This protocol addresses the protection of grunion nesting areas on beaches: BMP Beach Driving This protocol addresses driving on beaches and was created with the input of beach managers, lifeguards, equipment operators, and scientists: BMP Fire Rings This protocol addresses safety for fire rings on beaches: BMP Beach Ecology This protocol addresses plant management on beaches: BMP Snowy Plovers This protocol addresses the protection of Western Snowy Plovers during beach maintenance and the use of heavy machinery: BMP |
